Brittney Griner, who once faced bullying and suffered injuries, has now signed with the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA, cementing her status as a basketball legend.

After 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, Griner signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Dream in February 2026.

Born in Houston, Texas, on October 18, 1990, Griner faced many challenges growing up.

From the early years of her school life, she was 6 feet tall and often felt out of place; she was bullied in school for her height, deep voice, and appearance.

She was also bullied for her gender; teammates used to call her a boy, saying she didn’t have a chest, due to her LGBTQ+ identity.

But instead of letting the bullying break her spirit, she used it as motivation to prove her worth.

However, despite bullying from an early age, she started her basketball journey at Nimitz High School.

Her height and athleticism gave her an edge, but it was her hard work and dedication that truly distinguished her.

After her high school, she joined Baylor University and became the first NCAA player to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots.

She won multiple awards, including the AP Player of the Year and the ESPY for Best Female Athlete.

Later in 2013, Brittney Griner was selected as the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury.

Overcoming early-year bullying and pursuing her passion, Brittney Griner achieved success and became one of the most valuable players in the WNBA.

Unfortunately, in the 2026 WNBA season, Griner faced setbacks due to a neck injury while playing for the Atlanta Dream.

After starting the season as Atlanta’s primary center, she was moved to a bench role following her recovery.

Later, Griner also dealt with a left knee injury, which ruled her out of a key matchup against the Connecticut Sun.

Despite facing multiple injuries and bullying, Brittney Griner is today more than just a basketball star; she is a symbol of courage and perseverance.
