A broken picnic table in a Bremen community park has unexpectedly sparked one of the town’s most significant online arguments in recent memory, after a resident’s Facebook post blaming a group of teens prompted a wave of backlash, debate, humor, and heated exchanges from hundreds of locals.
The original post, shared by Sonja Rae in The Bremen Citizen Facebook group, urged parents to “ask their young teens which ones did the damage to this table.”
Rae claimed she had seen “young heavy set boys with a basketball up there in the dark” and suggested these teens had broken the table.

She went on to call them “hoodlums” and “heathens,” telling parents that if they couldn’t accompany their kids, they should “leave them at home.”
The post immediately triggered an explosion of reactions, ranging from constructive advice to mocking replies and full-on arguments over assumptions and the way Rae described the teens.
A large portion of the comment section centered on the idea that Rae jumped to conclusions without proof. Several questioned how she knew the teens caused the damage at all. One commenter ,
Did it ever occur to you that the table was like that before they arrived?
Another resident, Patricia Michelle, pressed the issue further:
Did you physically see them mess the table up or did you see them sitting on a broken table? Even if they did break the table. You have no right to belittle a child- no matter the age. Two wrong don’t make a right.
Others felt Rae was unfairly targeting the boys based on their appearance. Jamie LeBlanc wrote,
Watch…you are probably completely wrong about what happened. Do you know how strong someone would have to be to do that? You are calling out a child that you simply assumed did it because he was heavy? You were there…did you do it?
Several locals suggested the table’s design may be the actual issue. Candace Cowan ,
Looks like a defective table. Look how long the end is compared to the one behind it.
Another pointed out that similar tables in other parks have bent the same way.
A smaller portion of the group supported Rae’s concerns about park vandalism, but agreed her choice of words made the situation worse. One commenter wrote, “Kids don’t care because their parents don’t care.”
Another commenter wrote, “Lack of accountability is why we’re in the mess we’re in. Do better.”
As the debate grew, humor took over. Memes, jokes, and sarcastic comments quickly filled the thread. One commenter joked, “Okay bench police.”
Another asked, “why were you watching fat kids at the park in the dark?”
Some accused Rae of breaking the table herself, while others insisted the table had been bent for months. Several joked that the table couldn’t withstand the realities of life in Bremen.
One commenter wrote,
Atleast the kids are at the park and not out running the streets doing drugs and drinking!!!!! You seem like the Heathen being petty about a table and talking about overweight kids and assuming they did it. Way to judge Karen!!!! If it’s that big of a deal then fix the table yourself!!!!
Whether the teens broke the table intentionally, accidentally, or not at all remains unknown.
But one thing is clear: the online argument has become far bigger than the broken picnic table itself.
