The Florence community is mourning the sudden loss of Coach Eric Bridges, who tragically died in a car accident on the night of September 17, 2026.

Known for his unwavering dedication to students and athletes, Coach Bridges left an indelible mark on Florence Middle School, where he taught and coached for nearly 20 years.

Eric Bridges, born on November 16, 1978, devoted much of his life to education and athletics.

At Florence Middle School, he became more than just a coach—he was a mentor, leader, and role model.

His influence extended far beyond the baseball diamond, shaping the character and lives of countless students who looked up to him.

The Florence High School Baseball program expressed deep sorrow at his passing, stating:

“Coach Bridges spent almost 20 years impacting lives as a teacher and coach at Florence Middle School. He was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a leader, and a role model who dedicated countless hours to our athletes and community. His legacy will live on in every player who puts on an Eagle uniform.”

Coach Bridges was the of Mary Wright Lea and Ronald Lynn Bridges, and the stepson of Johnny Lea.

He was a devoted husband to Crystal Bridges and a beloved cousin, relative, and friend to many.

Family members and friends have taken to social media to express their grief and share memories.

His cousin, Charlene Rene, asked for prayers for the family, noting how many lives Eric touched. Jessica Purvis Bridges echoed those sentiments, urging prayers for his family, students, and friends.

Community members also poured out tributes, with many describing him as a man who loved what he did and showed it daily.

Parents expressed gratitude for the positive impact he had on their children, while colleagues and friends remembered him as someone who would be deeply missed.

Visitation for Ronald Eric Bridges will take place at First Baptist Church of Florence on Friday, September 19, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, September 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The funeral service will follow on Saturday, September 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., also at First Baptist Church of Florence. Burial will take place the same day at New Zion Baptist Church in Braxton at 12:15 p.m.

Coach Eric Bridges’ death has left a void in the Florence community that words cannot fully capture.

His dedication, love for teaching, and commitment to young athletes created a legacy that will endure for generations.

As the community gathers to honor his life, his influence will continue to live on in every student he taught, every athlete he coached, and every life he touched.
