A tragic shooting outside a high school football game claimed the life of 42-year-old Eric Calloway on Friday night, forcing officials to cancel the Lanett–LaFayette matchup.

The incident occurred along Alabama Avenue East, just across from the stadium, leaving the local community reeling.

Authorities 49-year-old Brint Bailey in connection with Calloway’s death.

Bailey was booked into the Chambers County Jail on September 19, 2026, where he remains in custody.

Investigators have not yet released a motive or explanation for what led to the shooting.

Mayor Kenneth Vines addressed the tragedy in a statement, emphasizing that the shooting was not connected to the football game.

He also commended the Public Safety Department for its rapid response to the scene.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted outside the stadium.

One fan shared a photo showing police lights flashing near the location of the shooting.

Fans and players were sent home immediately, and officials canceled the remainder of the game to allow investigators to process the scene safely.

Local journalist Elizabeth White noted the importance of reporting the incident fully, despite its proximity to a public event.

She explained that while shootings are, unfortunately, part of many communities, their occurrence near public gatherings directly affects families, players, and attendees.

“My job is not to make the news feel comfortable. It’s to tell the truth and honor the lives impacted by these tragedies,” White .

Community members have expressed grief and offered prayers for Calloway’s family.

Social media posts reflect the shock and sorrow felt by those who witnessed or were near the incident.

Many highlighted the quick action taken by officials in protecting the larger community and praised reporters for conveying the facts without sensationalism.

As the investigation continues, the city mourns the loss of Eric Calloway, remembering the tragic event that disrupted a night meant for sport and community gathering.
