James Bates, a longtime youth football and basketball coach, passed away from congestive heart failure at the age of 41 in November 2026.
He was a beloved father, husband, coach, and community leader.
James Bates was a familiar face in local courts and on local fields for years.
As a youth coach for football and basketball, his goal was about more than just winning games.
He taught the children the fundamentals of sports and life, including discipline, teamwork, confidence, and kindness. He was a guide who shaped young people both on and off the court.
His positive influence reached far beyond the individual players, touching families and strengthening the community. He changed whole neighborhoods for the better.

He passed away suddenly at the age of 41.
James’s passing, due to complications from congestive heart failure following a battle with COVID-19, has left a vast and painful void in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was a constant, encouraging presence on the sidelines and in the lives of countless young athletes. He was a mentor who taught lessons of teamwork, perseverance, and character.
James had a unique gift for making everyone feel seen and valued, whether with a word of advice, a cheer from the stands, or a well-timed joke to lift someone’s spirits.
He showed up for his community with his whole heart.

Above all, James was a devoted family man, and his family was his proudest achievement and his greatest joy. He is survived by his loving wife,, and their seven beautiful children, ages 8 to 18.
He was a constant presence in their lives, at every game, every school milestone, and every late-night talk, working tirelessly to ensure they felt supported, protected, and deeply loved.
His family has lost their rock.

He will be deeply and forever missed.
