Christian County High School basketball coach Lyle Dunbar died in his early 90s, leaving behind a grieving Kentucky community.
Coach Lyle Dunbar was a legendary high school basketball coach in Kentucky, best known for his tenure at Christian County High School.
He won 628 games over a 33-year career and was inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
His teams won six regional championships, showcasing consistent excellence and dominance in postseason play.
In 1978, he led Christian County to the Sweet 16 semi-finals, one of the highest honors in Kentucky high school basketball.

Coach Lyle Dunbar was a highly respected figure in Kentucky high school basketball.
Throughout his coaching journey, he led programs at schools including West Hopkins, Fordsville, Scottsville, Maysville, and Christian County.
Lyle Dunbar was a tremendous high school hoops coach at Christian Co.
The hoops gods cast Dunbar in one of our state’s more compelling sports dramas, when Christian Co. finished as state runner up in 1976 to Edmonson Co, – which was Kentucky’s real-life “Hoosiers.”

Having an impactful carrer in sports for over three decades of life, Dunbar passed away on October 16, 2026, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, after battling a long illness.
He is survived by his family, including a daughter, Theresa, and former players and colleagues, who have shared heartfelt tributes remembering his influence.
Following his passing at the age of 90, many have expressed their grief in the media, and some have even shared how impactful the coach was in their lives.
On a Facebook comment, one user wrote:
So sad . Coach Dunbar taught me a lot about basketball. He also gave me my first coaching job at CCMS for 25 years and I was fortunate to help coach in the high school for at least 10. Coach Dunbar was my coach and he was the best at preparing you for a big game RIP Coach
His passing has deeply touched the Christian County community and the wider Kentucky basketball world.
Many remember him not only for his coaching success but also for his mentorship and character.
Coach Lyle Dunbar’s legacy now continues through the players he guided, the programs he established, and the countless lives he inspired over the course of his decades-long dedication to the game.
