Remembering Coach John Nys: The Agility World Loses a Legend

John's influence lived not in trophies, but in the hearts of those he inspired.

John Nys, a world-renowned agility coach, competitor, and mentor, passed away on October 14, 2026. His passing left a profound void in the world of agility.

He had suffered from pneumonia, which caused his heart to go into atrial flutter in September 2026. Moreover, he had his last radiation and chemotherapy treatment in August 2026.

John Nys dedicated his life to the art of animal training, building an extraordinary career that inspired handlers and their dogs to reach full potential.

His journey with animals began not with dogs, but with horses, which earned him national titles, including the Massachusetts National Barrel Horse Rodeo Championship in 2002.

He successfully transitioned this skill to the world of dog agility and became one of the sport’s most respected figures.

Over a 25-year career, he achieved 30 Master Agility Champion Titles, was a 10-time International World Team Member, and represented the United States six times at the FCI World Championships.

John Nys reached the highest levels of the sport with his loyal canine partners Rush, Boss, and Trick, winning five Silver Medals and one Gold Medal in world-level competitions.

He shaped the sport as the Head Coach for the AKC Agility World Championship Team and guided a new generation of champions through his role as the President and Founder of Agility Rush.

On behalf of the American Kennel Club, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of John Nys. His passion for the canine world, dedication to the sport, and warm spirit touched many. He will be sorely missed by exhibitors, team members, and all who had the privilege to know him.

John Nys was a beloved coach, a fierce competitor, and a true legend in the world of dog agility. His passing left a profound sadness.

His passion for the sport he loved matched his unwavering connection to his community.

John’s presence lifted everyone around him, and others described him as warm, encouraging, and full of energy.

He was a mentor who believed fiercely in his students and celebrated their victories as if they were his own. His students recall his world-class expertise, infectious laughter, warmth, and uncanny ability to remember every student’s story.

Moreover, he taught perseverance, confidence, and the pure joy that comes from the partnership between a dog and its handler.

John built strong bonds with colleagues, competitors, and countless friends who admired his knowledge, kindness, and unwavering support.

Since the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the country, and handlers have shared cherished photos, memorable stories, and heartfelt messages calling him a leader and a friend.

The world just lost one his best men… an incredible competitor, a fantastic trainer, a great Coach, a true inspiration… but especially, an unmatched human being, a bright soul and a wonderful friend… 😔❤️

John Nys will be remembered as a true ambassador of the sport, who gave his heart to the canine community.

His legacy will live on in every competitor he coached, every team he built, and every moment of joy he brought to the sport.

Similarly, his passion for excellence, his generosity of spirit, and his belief that success begins with kindness will remain guiding principles for all who follow in his footsteps.

My dear friend, teammate and coach John Nys passed way last night. I, as so many others are devastated by this. So many tears. So many memories. The agility world will never be the same. Rest in piece John 😭😭😭

John’s family, friends, students, and the entire global agility community find comfort in their cherished memories and the lasting impact he leaves behind.

The Nys family hasn’t publicly released the funeral and memorial arrangements for the legendary coach. His loved ones and an entire community of handlers survive him.

Undoubtedly, his presence will be deeply missed. May his legacy continue to inspire future generations of dog lovers and competitors.
